Kyrgyzstan is among the countries with the highest rates of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). We strive to make tuberculosis treatment closer to the patients’ places of residence and minimize their stay in the hospital.

In 2018, we introduced the methodology for DR-TB treatment under video surveillance to increase patient compliance. We also assisted 103 primary health care facilities in Kara- Suu district and helped them start collecting sputum samples and thereby decentralize tuberculosis screening. By the end of the year, more than 70% of patients with DR-TB in Kara- Suu district were treated on out-patient basis and only a small number of patients remained in hospitals for close monitoring of side effects and their management.

In March 2018, the 7th MSF Regional Symposium was held in Bishkek on tuberculosis treatment, which brought together 160 experts from Europe and Asia. New approaches to treatment and expansion of the use of the latest TB drugs and diagnostic tools were discussed at the Symposium.
