Effective Support for Development

Kyrgyzstan is a partner country for German development cooperation. From the early 1990’s Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (German federal enterprise for international cooperation) has been implementing here projects commissioned mainly by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The Country Office of GIZ is based in Bishkek since 1992. It steers all GIZ activities in Kyrgyzstan and bears responsibility for the majority of the regional projects in Central Asia. Besides Bishkek office GIZ has offices in Osh and Jalal-Abad oblasts.

 

At present GIZ Kyrgyzstan has 177 employees among which 29 are foreign specialists.

 

Priority directions and activities

The coordinator of the Kyrgyz-German development cooperation is the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic. The cooperation for development focuses on two priority areas: ‘Sustainable economic development’ and ‘Health’. Upon the request of the Kyrgyz parties, GIZ’s work is broader in scope. In the health sector, on behalf of the BMZ, Kyrgyz-German cooperation is focused on improving the quality of integrated care services for pregnant women and newborns in five regions of Kyrgyzstan.
