DIABETES MELLITUS: Symptoms and Prevention
A chronic
disease that raises blood sugar levels.
Normal
blood sugar levels on an empty stomach – 3.3-5.5 mmol/L.
Diabetes
poses risks due to its complications:
If the disease is not treated in a timely manner, it
can lead to complications – heart stroke, brain stroke, blindness, kidney
failure, foot ulcer and gangrene, diabetic comas.

RISK FACTORS
The following risk factors increase the
likelihood of developing diabetes:

High level of blood cholesterol and lipids;
¨
Excess weight or obesity;
¨
Arterial hypertension and other heart
diseases;
¨
Hereditary predisposition to diabetes;
¨
Age – over 45;
¨
Sedentary lifestyle;
¨
Giving birth to children with a birth weight
of over 4 kg.
HOW DOES DIABETES MANIFEST ITSELF
SYMPTOMS

Increased urine output;
4
Dry mouth, thirst, and drinking too much
liquid;
4
Weakness, fatigue, decreased productivity;
4
Skin rash and irritated mucous membranes;
4
Weight loss despite increased appetite.

PREVENTION
EAT HEALTHY:
4 Consume less sugar, sweets, sugary carbonated and non-carbonated
beverages;
4 Limit your intake of fatty foods;
4 Eat more vegetables, greens, and fruit;
4 Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day;
4 Quit smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
MONITOR
YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL. GET A MEDICAL CHECK-UP ANNUALLY.
