Smokers more frequently suffer from hearing and vision loss
-
Smoking causes many
eye diseases that can lead to irreversible loss of vision if left untreated.
-
Smokers are much more
likely to develop age-related macular degeneration – a condition that leads to
irreversible vision loss – as compared to non-smokers.
-
Smokers also have a
higher risk of developing cataracts – the clouding of the eye’s lenses as a result
of which the ability of the eye to perceive light rays is reduced. Cataracts
cause vision to deteriorate, and surgery is the only way to restore vision.
-
Some data show that
smoking also causes glaucoma – a condition that leads to increased intraocular
pressure and may lead to vision deterioration.
- Adult smokers are
more likely to suffer from hearing loss.
