Cataract risk factors

A cataract is a pathological condition related to the clouding of the eye lens that causes different vision disorders – up to full blindness.

There are many reasons for the development of cataracts. They include elderly age, unfavorable impact of the environment, genetic predisposition, concomitant diseases, eye disease or injury.

Cataracts affect one in six people over 40 and the majority of people over 80.

The most common symptom of a cataract is decreased visual acuity. The vision may deteriorate or stay the same depending on the location of the clouding in the lens (in the center or on the periphery).

People with cataracts may complain about increased or decreased light sensitivity. Thus, some patients note that the world around them has become darker, while others say that they see the surrounding objects as if through a fogged up glass or film. All of the abovementioned symptoms are an indication to seek doctor’s help.

Quality of vision equals quality of life. Therefore, lead a healthy lifestyle and keep your eyes healthy.
